Family BASIC is a version of the BASIC programming language and shell, with extensions added to take advantage of the Famicom's graphics and sound capabilities - thus allowing the Family Computer to behave as a home computer. It comes with and requires the Famicom keyboard (HVC-007), and through that one can attach a tape recorder. This allows written programs to be saved to and loaded from cassette tapes, a common format for data storage at the time. An official cassette deck was released, but any with 3.5mm input and output jacks will do. Unfortunately, Family BASIC does not support the Disk System.
